The only reason it occurs as instantly funny and surprising is because they understand the meaning of the word hope. Hope is actually what they are looking for when they call. It is wishing, praying, hoping for something not found yet, but possibly... hopefully, available. How amazing it would be if we could fully understand the meaning of the word JESUS. So that, when He answers our call, we are overwhelmed with joy and laughter, knowing that His very name just solved our problem.
